There was a fantastic stage version of "Pocahontas" at Disneyland in the mid-nineties that ran on their Fantasyland Stage for a couple years. I saw it several times. The show was about thirty minutes long, and staged very cleverly, especially for a theme park show. One interesting take was that it was presented from the indigenous peoples' perspective, beginning with a Powhatan tribal storyteller (although I'm sure the casting would not meet today's standards). I understand it also played at Walt Disney World for a time, although I did not see it there.
The show running on Fantasyland Stage prior to "Pocahontas" was "Beauty and the Beast," and that production, directed by Rob Roth, was the catalyst for Disney to consider Broadway. The original Disneyland Belle was Stephanie Block. |
