There's a difference. You're thinking of the "extended finale" which goes back to Mozart at least, and yes, happens at the end of Act I in almost every G&S operetta. But a piece where different melodic lines are being sung by different characters simultaneously, is what the OP seems to be aiming at.

In G&S, I'd be thinking more about something like "How Beautifully Blue The Sky" or "When The Foeman" (Pirates) or "Welcome Gentry" (Ruddigore) or "Gaily Tripping" (Pinafore), where two distinct melodies are sung together after being heard separately.
