Never in a million years would I have ever thought I'd see Judy Kaye nominated for a Razzie.

Diana is not a movie, it is a filmed stage production, and it's awful that they'd include it in the Razzies

I'm not gonna defend Diana the Musical.... but... since when does a film of a stage production, with performances given in the context of a STAGE performance ON STAGE in front of a LIVE AUDIENCE who are there seeing a *stage show* ... since when does this count as a movie or a acting performance in a movie?

It's such low-hanging fruit to go after this filmed production, I think it's deplorable, especially for the actors singled out for the Razzies.

Since those responsible for filmed stage productions began putting themselves forward for other awards (à la Hamilton).

I also don't think Hamilton should have been eligible. Nor do I think Sunday in the Park or Into the Woods or Passion or NPH Company or Come From Away or any filmed stage production (unless it's just the concept of the film and is still a film, never meant as a play, like Dogville) should be eligible for film awards, no matter how good or bad it is. The production of it can be eligible for TV awards if it's put on tv (best special event, or whatever, best director ... but that would be for the director of the filming, not of the stage show -- or at least, both together).

It doesn't matter to me what the producers submit it for, the awards should say no because these are no films and have no business competing with films.

... the fact remains that so long as the "legit" awards shows consider them eligible, they are fair game for those awards the spoof them as well.

Look at the other nominees. The Razzie's have become primarily a thing to punch-up at stars who need to be taken down a notch, who are popular to hate (for right or wrong reasons at the time), or good actors who have given notably bad performances or stars who chose terrible projects and did badly in them. Nominating a supporting actor from the filmed stage production of Diana against people like Mel Gibson, Ben Affleck, Nick Canon, and Jared Leto - and in the films they got their Razzie noms for -- is just ridiculous and inconsistent. There are certainly worse featured male performances in movies last year than those 4 famous people this year... the goal was picking on famous and successful actors making bad choices and giving hilariously subpar performances. Not actually nominating the worst of all films or filmed-things eligible.

They nominated Diana to be funny. But i think for the people nominated it's cruel, especially since they didn't even give performances FOR film, they gave them for stage, and in a universally agreed upon mediocre-to-bad musical.

But sure, technically, they're within their jurisdiction to nominate Diana. Good for them.

I mostly agree with you, but they did give these performances for film. It was filmed without an audience for the purpose of a Netflix release and they knew that the camera was there. If they didn't modulate their performances for the camera that's on them.

Wow. Ben gets Razzie nom for pretty much the same performance he won a Tony for.

You’ve got to adjust for the camera.

But Erin Davie? Her Camilla, subtle and recognizably human, is the only performance that works.

Seems the cast got awarded just for being in the bad film.

LOL, he was nominated not only for Worst Actor but DEH was also nominated for Worst Screen Couple, in the subcategory: Ben Platt & Any Other Character Who Acts Like Platt Singing 24-7 is Normal.

I wonder if audiences would have loved DIANA if it were titled DIANA: A COMEDY?

During the 1997-1998 season, there was a play on Broadway called JACKIE: AN AMERICAN LIFE, written and directed by Gil Hoppe, that told the story of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as an absurdist black comedy. There were even puppets (the design of which won a Drama Desk that year). I thought it was brilliant and hilarious, but almost no one agreed with me. People did not want to see this take on her story. I think there was a feeling that it was disrespectful to a saint (she'd only been gone a couple of years at that point), but I actually didn't think it was disrespectful at all to HER, just some of the people in her life.

But, whether you liked the play or didn't, Margaret Colin's performance as Jackie was perfect in every way and absolutely right as the center of all the wackiness. My mother, who grew up during the Camelot era and who is a huge admirer of Jackie, was somewhat bewildered by the play, but had nothing but praise for Colin. She should have won all kinds of awards that year, but the general negative reaction to the play probably put the kibosh on that, even though she did pick up a Theatre World Award.

So I don't think that kind of take would have worked for DIANA either.

However, if you are interested in a comedy version of the royal family, check out Netflix's THE WINDSORS, which is also an absurd comedic delight. It features the modern royal family (so no Diana, alas) as a comedy soap opera and features theatre actors Haydn Gwynne as Camilla and Richard Goulding, who played the same character in KING CHARLES III, as Harry for the first two seasons.

Given the success and acclaim of the dramatic portrayals of Diana in both The Crown and Spencer, it seems pretty clear that the issue is the vehicle and not the subject.

I haven't seen the musical adaption, but the reviews were... not good.

I collapsed into giggles every time the dancing paparazzi swooped past, with their twirling trench coats. I found it painfully awful.
