LOL, he was nominated not only for Worst Actor but DEH was also nominated for Worst Screen Couple, in the subcategory: Ben Platt & Any Other Character Who Acts Like Platt Singing 24-7 is Normal.

I wonder if audiences would have loved DIANA if it were titled DIANA: A COMEDY?

During the 1997-1998 season, there was a play on Broadway called JACKIE: AN AMERICAN LIFE, written and directed by Gil Hoppe, that told the story of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis as an absurdist black comedy. There were even puppets (the design of which won a Drama Desk that year). I thought it was brilliant and hilarious, but almost no one agreed with me. People did not want to see this take on her story. I think there was a feeling that it was disrespectful to a saint (she'd only been gone a couple of years at that point), but I actually didn't think it was disrespectful at all to HER, just some of the people in her life.

But, whether you liked the play or didn't, Margaret Colin's performance as Jackie was perfect in every way and absolutely right as the center of all the wackiness. My mother, who grew up during the Camelot era and who is a huge admirer of Jackie, was somewhat bewildered by the play, but had nothing but praise for Colin. She should have won all kinds of awards that year, but the general negative reaction to the play probably put the kibosh on that, even though she did pick up a Theatre World Award.

So I don't think that kind of take would have worked for DIANA either.

However, if you are interested in a comedy version of the royal family, check out Netflix's THE WINDSORS, which is also an absurd comedic delight. It features the modern royal family (so no Diana, alas) as a comedy soap opera and features theatre actors Haydn Gwynne as Camilla and Richard Goulding, who played the same character in KING CHARLES III, as Harry for the first two seasons.

Given the success and acclaim of the dramatic portrayals of Diana in both The Crown and Spencer, it seems pretty clear that the issue is the vehicle and not the subject.

I haven't seen the musical adaption, but the reviews were... not good.

I collapsed into giggles every time the dancing paparazzi swooped past, with their twirling trench coats. I found it painfully awful.
