MUSIC MAN Musical Construction
Posted by: Clancy 01:05 am EST 02/08/22

Will Friedwald argues the musical construction of 'The Music Man' is radical and innovative.
-------------------
“Shipoopi” imbues a nonsense word with contextual significance even while the chorus sings a major scale in solfeggio (“Do-Re-Mi,” two years before “The Sound of Music”) in the background.

I've seen the publicity photo accompanying this article many times now and I am perplexed by the costume design -- What's the reason for the saffron robes in this version of the show?? It looks almost Bollywood! And why does the star look like he is wearing rehearsal clothing?? Very bizarre look for this show...

The robes are likely the Wa-Tan-Ye costumes the girls had on for the earlier scene.
Jackman cuts a nice figure in fewer clothes which may explain why he is often dressed as "in rehearsal."
Both of the above are just a guess...not seeing the show until May 24th, and I paid more for any show I have ever paid for in my life by several hundred dollars. :(

Just wondering. What was it about this production that made you pay "more for any show I have ever paid for in my life by several hundred dollars."?

I could have read another ten pages of this article! I have radio recordings of shows from the late 1930s that feature Willson as both musical director and occasional guest. He was even a panelist on an early 1950s game show (sporting a great head of hair). His score for Music Man is pretty much flawless and a joy to perform.

Apologies if this is music theory pedantry, but the Shipoopi scale is actually modal--mixolydian to be specific. (I'm sure anyone who has music directed the show has had a moment of reminding the ensemble to flat the 7th scale tone!) It's the scale you get if you play all the white notes starting on G. I agree this is a great article though--the cleverness and craft and innovations in the score are amazing!
