Tony Kushner should've gotten an Oscar nomination for adding more historical context and deepening the characters in ''West Side Story.''

I'm glad the Writers Guild of America nominated him for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as Steven Levenson for ''tick ... tick ... BOOM!''

However, the screenplays to musicals are historically underrated by the Academy. Kushner and Levenson both missed the cut today.

The last screen version of a Broadway musical to get Oscar nominated for Adapted Screenplay was 20 years ago: ''Chicago.''

Even the original ''West Side Story'' (1961) won 10 of its 11 Oscar nominations; the only one it lost was Adapted Screenplay.

I also don't know how Oscar voters watched ''West Side Story'' without nominating Sarah Broshar and Michael Kahn for Editing.

Plus, I was rooting for Rachel Zegler, a Golden Globe winner, and Mike Faist, a BAFTA nominee, to get surprise nominations.

I agree that Ariana DeBose is probably the film's best bet to win, but it might have a goot shot at Cinematography and Sound.

For context: About 70 years ago, my favorite ''Singin' in the Rain'' got only 2 nominations: for Supporting Actress and Musical Scoring.
