I loved ''tick ... tick ... BOOM!,'' Miranda's directorial debut, and wish it had been up for Best Picture at the Oscars, like it was at PGA.
Alas, the Oscars evidently can handle only 1 live-action musical for Best Picture at a time. (In 1969, they had ''Oliver!'' and ''Hello, Dolly!'')
Yes, Andrew Garfield and its editing were Oscar-nominated, but I also was rooting for Robin de Jesus, plus Steven Levenson's adaptation.
It was also disappointing that the film version of Miranda's ''In the Heights'' got shut out across the board. It definitely deserved better.
On the other hand, Miranda's animated film, ''Encanto,'' did very well with 3 nominations: Best Animated Film (where it's the front-runner), plus Best Score (by Germaine Franco) and Best Song. Even though it's the lovely ''Dos Oruguitos'' that's Oscar-nominated (and not the Billboard blockbuster ''We Don't Talk About Bruno''), the popularity of ''Encanto'' and its soundtrack could carry Miranda to his EGOT. Fingers crossed! |
