I got the impression that if the producers did NOT send them contracts, then they would be breaking the terms of the deal memo. In that case, the quartet would be able to sue, and the producers would have no case. But by sending over contracts (albeit with different terms than what the quartet was expecting), the producers can argue that they have legally fulfilled their obligations, and the quartet's rejection of those contracts would indicate (in their eyes) that they are refusing the job offers and are therefore not entitled to any additional compensation.

The question for the courts, it seems, will be to decide whether the offered contracts were indeed very different from what was promised in the deal memo.
