How's this for a new ending?:
Marian gets Harold to "lead the band".
The kids play terribly, but their parents are thrilled that the kids are "blatting".
Harold gets this second of satisfaction, he looks back and forth from the kids to Marian - gives Marian a beautiful kiss and runs off to hit the road again.
Startling, perhaps, and a bit sad, but true and makes sense. And Hill returns to the open road. Not betraying his nature, but acknowledging for one, brief, shining moment, that he wasn't a complete heel. Marian knows she was hoodwinked, but she acknowledges that she had her moment.
Bittersweet, and heartbreaking but ... an ENDING!
