Iconic Bway Roles that Didn’t win the Tony?

It’s still surprising to me that Chita’s Anita in West Side Story and Stephanie Mills in The Wiz didn’t even get nominations.

I think Rita’s Oscar win made people go back and realize that oh yes, Chita was great too.

Streisand lost for Funny Girl as did Merman in Gypsy.

Carol Lawrence was nominated for Featured Actress for WSS--I suppose that was based on billing, as it sometimes is (the Tony Committee is nothing if not inconsistent across the years). Perhaps the nominators felt there was only space for one performer from the relatively unknowns in WSS. But, of course, Anita is the true featured actress role--Maria is the lead. Barbara Cook won--again, I suppose the thinking was that everyone other than Harold Hill was "featured" (also based on billing?) Marian is the heart of the show, IMO. Looking at IBDB, I see that two actresses from Oh, Captain were nominated, and that there was a tie for Leading Actress--Gwen Verdon and Thelma Ritter in New Girl. Ritter's Marthy, wonderful as she is on the OBC, is clearly a supporting role, so who knows? I assume, again, that Ritter's billing and name value from Hollywood (she'd received 4 supporting nominations with 2 more to come) was the rationale.

It's still stunning to me that Chita Rivera wasn't Tony-nominated for her iconic Anita, but who knows what the nominators were thinking?

Ironically, one of the most thankless and underrated roles in Tony history has to be Tony ... in ''West Side Story.''

Actresses playing Maria (Carol Lawrence, Josie de Guzman, Josephina Scaglione) and Anita (Debbie Allen, Karen Olivo) got Tony nominated.

But Larry Kert, the original Tony (1957), didn't get a Tony nomination, and neither did Ken Marshall (1980) and Matt Cavenaugh (2009).

It looked like Isaac Powell (2020) would break this trend, but then COVID happened. So the Tonys passed over Tony again. Not cool!

Spiro Malas, who played Tony in the 1992 Broadway revival of "Most Happy Fella" surprisingly wasn't nominated. Three other principals were, including Scott Waara who won for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
