Do we know when the Tony cutoff is? And what is going to win Best Play?

Has there been an announcement about when the last day of Tony eligibility will be? There's the usual jam-packed April calendar, but I don't think there's been an official announcement.

Looking at the spring, there are only three new plays that will be running: The Minutes, Hangmen, and Birthday Candles. My impression is all three plays will get "good but not amazing" kind of reviews. Is The Lehman Trilogy still the frontrunner for Best Play, even though it will be long gone at that point? I'm not sure any of the other plays this season have gotten such strong reviews or buzz that they are definitely getting nominated, let alone win. The other plays of the season are Pass Over, Chicken & Biscuits, Is This a Room, Thoughts of a Colored Man, Dana H, Clyde's, and soon-to-close Skeleton Crew.

Any thoughts about what's likely to nominated or win?

I would think the tony cutoff and tony award ceremony will be announced soon. My guess is they didn’t want to announce any plans in case broadway had to shut down again.

Hangman might have a chance. This is Martin mcdonagh’s 7th play on broadway and no best play tony yet. Although I didn’t care for hangman much especially compared to several of his previous plays. I think Lehman is most likely the winner. And Lehman is doing a mini tour which is rare for any play.

Hangmen plays well to an in person audience, I seem to recall you only saw a broadcast of it which I don’t think would be quite the same. Obviously as his trademark his plays often very carefully balance humor and horror and you feel that transition buzzing from the people around you.

I rate it around the middle of his plays, for example not nearly as good as his best The Pillowman or Lieutenant of Inishmore but better than the Cripple of Inishmaan and ten times better than the disastrous in my opinion “A Very Very Very Dark Matter”.

HANGMEN is a thrilling play and was brilliantly served in a thrilling production -- one of MM's very best, which is saying a lot.

A VERY VERY VERY monotonously titled monstrosity has been forever consigned to the dustbin.

But I don’t think I would have liked it any more in person. That has been the case for most shows that I see both ways.

I agree that pillowman and lieutenant are his best
With beauty queen next in line although I was glad that Art won that year.

No one seems to believe it will open this season. I think they would have had to say something by now; April is two months away.

Peculiarly, Roundabout with Birthday Candles, Second Stage with Take Me Out, Manhattan Theatre Club with How I Learned to Drive, and LCT with The Skin of Our Teeth are all currently schedule to close that spring show on May 29, which is presumably before the Tonys take place. It's unusual to close the spring show so early, if I recall correctly. I think usually they want to capitalize on the Tonys by having the spring show still open at that time.
