Hangmen plays well to an in person audience, I seem to recall you only saw a broadcast of it which I don’t think would be quite the same. Obviously as his trademark his plays often very carefully balance humor and horror and you feel that transition buzzing from the people around you. I rate it around the middle of his plays, for example not nearly as good as his best The Pillowman or Lieutenant of Inishmore but better than the Cripple of Inishmaan and ten times better than the disastrous in my opinion “A Very Very Very Dark Matter”.

HANGMEN is a thrilling play and was brilliantly served in a thrilling production -- one of MM's very best, which is saying a lot. A VERY VERY VERY monotonously titled monstrosity has been forever consigned to the dustbin.

But I don’t think I would have liked it any more in person. That has been the case for most shows that I see both ways. I agree that pillowman and lieutenant are his best With beauty queen next in line although I was glad that Art won that year.
