The Variety review as well as the AP review will most likely influence many people, especially outside the USA. To people not so steeped in theatre news, Variety is believed to (likely) be the best source of advice. And the AP review will likely be read in many places because of its distribution to other media outlets.
But the best and unexpected endorsement came from Ryan Reynolds ( who has 41 million Instagram followers) -- his gag gift to good friend Hugh is making the rounds of entertainment sites. Who knows - movie fans may also become part of The Music Man audience ( since the most enduring Music Man memory comes from the film adaptation).
Ryan also came to Opening Night with wife Blake Lively and director Shawn Levy ( who worked with Hugh in Real Steel). So did Les Mis co-star Anne Hathaway. Opening Night seemed more like a Hollywood premiere! But Broadway royalty like ALWebber & Jordan Roth were also there. Even the fashion industry was well-represented - with Anna Wintour (Vogue has always been Jackman-friendly), Diane von Furstenberg ( wife of Barry Diller - the couple were donors of NYC's Little Island)& social activist Donna Karan. Politicians were there, too. NY & NYC leadership and even ex-Mayor Bloomberg. That mix of people made Opening Night seemed like a welcome promise to the return of some normalcy to daily lives, including theatregoing! |
