He's not really a big star, but he has done quite a few films, and he actually has a terrific voice, more than needed for Harold Hill -- but I think James Marsden would be excellent. He's played some scoundrels as well as good guys in his films. He was terrific in the movie "Hairspray" as Corny Collins, and I would have liked to have seen him do more in the way of musicals. Or Jeremy Northam, so wonderful in "Gosford Park" as Ivor Novello, who did a very creditable job as American Dean Martin in a tv movie some years ago as well as capable of playing villainous characters.

James Marsden is a great idea, and my geeky brain responds with more suggestions. Because after you have a Harold Hill played by Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and Marsden (Cyclops), you can add Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler) and Kelsey Grammer (the Beast). And let’s not forget that Sir Ian McKellen (Magneto) has said he wants to do a musical…

Somewhere, my pal Len Wein, noted Broadway buff and X-Men creator, must be smiling.

Laura, who’s only kidding here, folks, so don’t start having fits

I need Maggie Smith as Marian when Ian takes over. Or Judi Dench, anyway. Or Patrick Stewart. Maggie would make a Hell of a Eulalie. I mean, the deliver of “I’ll tell”

Max Clayton is the Harold Hill standby. He didn't get a chance to go on when Jackman was sick because he also had Covid then.

Sean Montgomery is the understudy.

According to imdb, Clayton is 30 years old and is not appearing in the show unless he is playing Harold Hill, as would typically be true for a standby. I am sure Clayton is a wonderful performer, but he seems like an odd choice age-wise given the ages of Jackman and Foster.
