| I've always been absolutely baffled how Caroline or Change was not on the list of finalists, let alone the winner of a Pulitzer. I can't think of another musical more suited to recognition from the Pulitzer, and more in line with what it claims to celebrate. And it was written by the most famous and celebrated Pulitzer-winning playwright of the day (I don't think there's any doubt that Angels in America stands head and shoulders above all other Pulitzer-winning plays in terms of fame, acclaim, and notoriety for many decades). It seems unlikely the committee just didn't find it up to stuff. If it was eligible in 2003, the winner was Anna in the Tropics (a big surprise to everyone), finalists were The Goat, and Take Me Out. If it was 2004, the winner was I Am My Own Wife, finalists were Man from Nebraska and Omnium Gatherum. Just 3 years later they had 4, 1 winner and 3 finalists, so it's not like that was impossible to include Caroline. And 5 years later In the Heights was a finalist. On no level does ITH deserve that recognition more than Caroline. Of course it's possible it's just how it shook out. I also think Assassins (1990) and Floyd Collins (1999) should have been at least Pulitzer nominees as far as musicals go, but neither moved to Broadway or had quite as much going for them as Pulitzer packages as Caroline. But I have several other musicals I'd have made nominees and kicked out one of the plays that made the list... but that's just me. |
