So what was the rush in 2020 to book a Broadway house and record a Broadway cast album?

Striking while the iron was hot, probably. And in a season not very well stocked with musical competition. Now they've all been away from it for two years (and there's no suitable Broadway house open), so it makes more sense to take the time.

So are they out for this season? Playbill's website still has them starting previews this year, but I'm guessing that will be sometime post-Tonys/in the fall?

They'll be in Boston in the fall, so presumably New York would be a spring opening.

The lead producer is Barbara Broccoli, who controls the rights and is the active lead producer of the James Bond franchise. She’s been involved with around half a dozen Broadway shows, from Once to The Band’s Visit, but I believe this is meant to be her first venture as lead producer on stage. She has an estimated net worth of over $400 million, so capitalization will not be a problem, and and I believe she’s been involved with the show since getting the stage rights from the 2016 movie, so at this point, after everything from Hangmen to American Buffalo has been put back on the calendar, it would take something a lot more serious than a pandemic for her to not bring the show in to Broadway. (from link below: “ In a statement released last week, Broccoli and her co-producers announced their intention to create “a proper runway” to launch the musical.”)
