My White Knight/Being In Love

Does anyone know the reason for this change in the otherwise faithful adaptation of The Music Man to the screen? I know it's a song Willson reworked quite a bit during the show's development; perhaps he was never happy with it? Could Shirley not sing the end as composed, and was transposing it not an acceptable option? Did Willson just want an original song in the film to have a shot at an Oscar nomination?

I don't know if there has ever been an official explanation, but if there has I am curious as to what it is.
