John Gallagher, Stark Sands and Adrian Blake Enscoe are astonishing as shipwreck victims, set adrift on the sea, in ''Swept Away'' at Berkeley Rep.
They're so compelling and committed to their roles, and sound so wonderful singing the folk-country melodies by the Avett brothers.
It's a tale of redemption and desperation, and the story gets intense. It might not be for everybody, but it's hard to imagine a better production.
Michael Mayer directed, and the book's by John Logan, who did the sea-themed ''The Last Ship.'' (And there's a magical set change I won't spoil.)
Could it be ''Swept Away'' to Broadway? Maybe if this one-act musical could drop anchor at an intimate theater, like Circle in the Square. |
