Concerns about Daughter-in-Law
Posted by: bythesea2007 08:58 am EST 02/17/22

I’m going to be seeing the show over the weekend and my concern is the dialect. I tried reading the book several times and it was near impossible for me. Just curious if anyone has seen it and it’s more understandable spoken. I’m not great with accents so I have a concern. Fortunately, it’s at a small theater so that should help. Appreciate hearing from anyone who has seen it or knows anyone who has invoiced this concern. Thanks.

Just watched that clip. Those Yorkshire dialects and accents take some getting used to but I try and not obsess over it when I'm watching something and miss things. Like anything in life, it's best to just let your confusion go and stay in the moment. I've seen enough theatre in languages I don 't understand to know that even without a word of dialogue I can still appreciate emotional beats and relationships between characters.

They sound pretty good to my ear. I have never seen The Daughter-in-Law but I have seen some other D.H. Lawrence one-acts and he really loved mining the peculiar argot of that region. Just accept the fact that some of it will go over your head and if you're not someone who hates spoilers, have a look at a synopsis so you can piece things together. Sometimes the most satisfying stories are ones we've heard before!

Enjoy!

I haven't seen it yet, bythesea2007, but accents are a welcome challenge for me. I hadn't heard of this play, so I thank you for posting. Now I will be likely to.

As Ann suggests, I do think it will be easier to understand in the theater. Please let us know.

It;s really tough...I'd recommend trying to familiarize yourself with as much of the dialogue and plot as possible.

At the coat check after the performance, someone handed back a hearing device and said, "I could hear everything fine, but it didn't help."

There is a video on their website, for a test drive (though I think things would be easier to discern in the theatre).

Thank you, Ann. Certainly a lot better than reading it.
