Gelb had to take the stand as everyone else was doing it; past a certain point to have hosted Netrebko or Gergiev even if they were still interested in doing so would have signaled a support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Both Netrebko and Gergiev have creeped me out for a good decade now. I haven't gone to their performances. I think I tried with Netrebko a while back and all I could think of while she was performing was novichock and Syria.
I have a similar problem walking into Carnegie Hall with with its $25 million Blavatnik Family First Tier or the late non-Russian oligarch David H. Koch and his $100 million renovation of the New York State Theater. I'm wondering if Len Blavatnik's largesse will remain on display in nyc and Oxford where he has endowed a School of Government, no less.
However, I never tried to shame my friends who adored Netrebko or tried to spoil their pleasure in any way. It just made me quietly sad, very sad. In fact, this very fast collapse of the Western geopolitical order makes me very depressed and in dread of the future. All that is separate from the sorrow I feel for the people in Ukraine. |
