| I had just the opposite experience and I wasn't even stage dooring. I may have posted this before and won't again. When I saw Bernadette Peters in GYPSY I was seated in the front row. Whenever she was singing on my side of the stage I had the feeling she was making eye contact with me. After the show, I dawdled a bit outside the theatre, and when it came time to walk thru Shubert Alley, there were barricades leading from the stage door to Bernadette's waiting care. She was already way past me down the line of waiting fans when the strangest thing happened. She suddenly turned around, spotted me, and took the time to walk over to me. She took my Playbill out of my hand and as she signed it kind of mumbled, "Ah, my front row guy." Not sure I was hearing correctly I said, "Excuse me." She replied, "You were sitting in the front row, weren't you?" I mentioned there were times I felt like she was singing just to me and she said, "I was", handed me back my Playbill, and walked away. I've always felt that maybe she saw the expression on my face as I was falling under her spell as she sang. Totally mesmerized by her unique talent. I'm aware of the exchange of energy that can transpire between a performer and an audience member sometimes. The fact that Ms. Peters approached me made me feel it was her way of thanking me for being a participant in that wonderful experience that only can happen in live theatre. I too, firmly believe a performer has no obligation to stage door. As already stated they've given their all for 2 and 1/2 or so hours so let them go home and relax. But after my experience that evening I wondered if some performers actually enjoy spending a short time after the show intermingling with their audience. |
