It wouldn't surprise me to hear that the rights holders for SOME LIKE IT HOT and SUGAR had no problem agreeing to this new musical. SUGAR is no one's best work and it seems to have fallen out of the repertory, aside from the occasional community theatre production somewhere. This new show is a chance for everyone to earn some money for, essentially, nothing. No one involved in the creation of either work is still alive.
I always hoped that Kander and Ebb might do a new SOME LIKE IT HOT. It would've been right up their alley as another story showcasing the unseemly underbelly of show business. Sugar Kane is photo negative of Roxie Hart...she will do anything to GET OUT of show business, including marry any random millionaire who asks her. It's too bad that Roxie and Sugar never crossed paths in Chicago...I'm sure that Sugar would love a nice guy mechanic to support her and give her a decent life and Roxie would adore running away to Florida to sing with a band at a fancy hotel. |
