| It was mentioned here recently by both Seth Christenfeld and NeoAdamite that there was a fair number of empty seats on the separate nights they saw it. I am linking Seth's post, and NeoAdamite's reply is directly below Seth's post. It may be another case of a Newhouse run seeming to be sold out because so many seats are put aside in advance as house seats, and then they go unused and there are empty seats, sometimes a lot of empty seats. When I saw Contact at the Newhouse, it was supposedly sold out. It was also perceived as being at the time the hottest ticket in town, impossible to get tickets for. I would say that around a quarter of the seats were empty on the night I saw it, maybe more like a third. The handful of people who got on the cancellation all got in and there were still plenty of empty seats. If people knew that in truth it was not sold out, I am sure more people would have been on the cancellation line. Later, the Wendy Wasserstein play Old Money was announced as sold out almost immediately after tickets went on sale, with many LCT members unable to get seats for the limited run and quite annoyed about it, especially those who had earlier been unable to get tickets for Waiting for Godot. After it opened to disappointing reviews, not only did it turn out that it was not sold out, it was regularly available at TKTS. |
