Opposite point of view: The play is a perfect little gem, and the opera was a diminishment of the play, which worked best when it was using the bones of the original to tell the still-compelling story.

As for why "Intimate Apparel" over "Flying over Sunset", I think it's very clear which of the two was well received by New York, and which of the two has a cultural impact in the moment. "Intimate Apparel" is also a piece that can be a nice entry point for people who are curious about opera, and it has enough moments that are sublime to remind us why American opera should be nurtured. And then add that it is an opera written largely for Black singers, and it's an important piece even if it's not as fully realized as I was hoping for.
