I think what it means is whatever the designated committee at the time thinks it means, and they're not talking (but they can be shamed into changing their collective mind).
I don't think it means "a rare gesture reserved for the true giants" at this time, at least not always. It seems like it was more like that in the past, but not recently.
That said, Walton probably is a giant in his area of theatre (in my committee of one).
I don't think it was disrespectful to ask. |
