If you don’t know that it’s raining but someone else tells you it’s not, the best thing to say is, “I’ve been told it’s not raining”.

Likewise, after a few months of performances, I would expect, if nothing else, that the House Manager would have been informed by audience members as to which seats have obstructed views, and to have reported that in show reports which go out to the full house staff, box office included. So there is a basis to expect the box office staff to know what those seats are like.

That said, you’re right, we don’t know whether the producer of the show told the box office staff to only say specific seats were obstructed view, regardless of the truth. I would be inclined to think that’s the case: once those seats are acknowledged by anyone on the production to be partial view, it becomes harder to sell them for full price.

However it happened, OP went to see a musical about a con man and got conned, which I guess makes this an immersive production.
