| I wouldn't consider If/Then or Next To Normal downtown shows with or without quotation marks. They never played downtown. N2N had it's NY premiere in the theater district at Second Stage and If/Then didn't have a NY production at all before Broadway. I agree with you on Spring Awakening and somewhat on Passing Strange. In terms of shows thet Rent inspired, I'd think more of Fascinatin' Gershwin, the 2000 JCS revival, and Bright Lights/Big City even though it didn't make it to Broadway. Moreso, I'd say that Rent had an affect on traditional shows NOT doing well. For instance, State Fair from the same season. It got dismissed because it wasn't edgy like Rent and Noise//Funk. |
