| And let us not forget Via Galactica. Although, really, who could? I am pretty sure that there were others that are just not coming to mind because they were short-lived and are largely forgotten and left little trace behind. Well, I can think of a few titles, but I am not positive they count, and I don't feel like doing the research right now to find out. Of course, flops tend not to be all that influential. Then a hit comes along doing similar things, and the hit is influential because lots of people see it, and if it is a musical, there is a cast recording. Sondheim made the point that Allegro had continuous action with no breaks for scene changes, but South Pacific was generally cited as the show that demonstrated that it could be done because South Pacific was a big hit. (Actually, Allegro was not even the first, it seems. One show that did it earlier was Lady in the Dark, but in such a different way and at such a high production cost that it was not immediately influential or at least was not noted as being influential in this respect.) Speaking of which, if Allegro and Love Life had been more successful, would we have seen a lot more shows playing games with time and space, and commentary on the action, etc., much earlier? Or even if Allegro had a fuller cast recording and Love Life had gotten a cast recording at all (as it probably would have had if it had not opened during a Petrillo ban). The type of shows that Martin Gottfried later called concept musicals, a term that gained currency even though some of the people who wrote the shows that inspired the term did not care for the term and did not generally use it to describe their shows. |
