What doesn't make sense is the appropriation of that gesture by the self-appointed "community."
But I really don't think it is that, at all. Dimming the lights has become a tradition, and now many people expect it because it's been done many times. I don't think there was ever a sense of "appropriating the gesture," nor do I feel there is a "self-appointed 'community'" behind the scenes with their hands (metaphorical or otherwise) on the light switches.
Personally, I think it's a nice tradition, and one that shouldn't have to be made so damned political in these comments. But of course, one of the fine longstanding traditions on ATC is to over-argue everything, lol, and that's never going away either. :-) |
