| I am all for the tradition. My objection is to the appropriation of the DECISION by what I am calling the community, by which I essentially mean the internet. If you look, you will see that, prior to the internet reaching critical mass, the decision was private and decided upon by the theatre owners (at some point, through the League). I think it cheapens the gesture, unfortunately to the point that it is less meaningful. I like the comparison to flags at half mast. A federal or state or local government can order flags under its jurisdiction flown at half mast. But it is not a referendum. Likewise, if I was to lower my flag (or not), that gesture is my prerogative. We agree it should not be political. |
