I fondly remember Johnny Brown singing "Don't Forget 127th Street" with Sammy Davis on some TV variety show, possibly Ed Sullivan. Brown played Ronnie, who was the lead singer in the number. There was a young male actor named Terrin Miles, who was supposed to sing the saucy lyric Don't forget our glorious P.S. 92/ With the 90 kids in every class/ Radiators full of ice all winter through/ Man, oh, man, you really freeze your ass/ -- except Ed (or someone) made the kid sing the word "tail" instead of "ass", muffled by Davis, who put his hand over the kid's mouth when he got to the last word of the verse. Those were the days!
Ed Sullivan wouldn't even let the great Jackie Gleason sing the lyric "Oh the women are fat in the ankles/ And they all kinda droop in the can" from the Take Me Along musical number "Sid, Ol' Kid". |
