When I saw it, five of us semi-backpackers got tickets the very day, and sat in the first tier/dress circle. We saw the Saturday matinee, if memory serves, and that night Gretchen Wyler in the (formerly Julie Prowse starred) Sweet Charity, also with the late Paula Kelly. Quite a weekend of musical theater immersion for a 16-year-old. Though the La Mancha was the show I spoke about most often -- buying the 2-disc recording -- the Golden Boy score stuck. And to see Davis was a genuine thrill. He was a global superstar in 1968.
Arcane theater history: When I was in London that summer, the big long-running London hit was a show called Charlie Girl*. Anyone ever see it? I've never heard a song from it. But still remember the posters lining the lengthy escalators of the Tube.
*Hugh Williams, Margaret Vyner, Ray Conney written. Ran 2202 performances. |
