1997, written before*.My bigger point: it’s a pre social media, pre internet and cell phone culture. All of the financial plot snares are pre web based bill paying and other aspects of financial accountability. The fact that people can disappear into thin air untethered to textable numbers, cut off only from hotel landlines. It’s a very different level of access, and would be challenging to update. I’d guess that keeping it in the last century is critical.
*all of the flashbacks to the Alexa origin story are stated as being in the eighties; that’s where I erred |
