| Well, "triple threat" not in the terms of Gwen Verdon when she originated the role. Haven't they taken out most of the role's dancing for quite a number of revival Roxies? Not sure what passes muster for singing or acting from some of these replacements in any of the roles, but there have probably been some hopefully pleasant surprises in the many years of the revival. I think most of the Velmas haven't had "big name" replacements as the role as conceived, while not having most of the plot on her shoulders, she does have too much dancing for it to to be "dumbed down" or "movement for beginners" in that sense. I've always been surprised that they didn't have Paula Abdul as Velma, especially around her "American Idol" years, when she would have been big box-office and who certainly might have been great and could have danced the role really well. |
