Somehow I’d missed that he’s playing Charley and not Frank. It is better casting, for sure, but I’d assumed he’d go for the slightly more central role.

Now the casting dept. has a real challenge: Frank is the harder role to cast by far – not unlike Bobby in Company, he’s a bit of a cipher, and even more than Bobby, you have to find someone not afraid to be unlikable but who will still retain empathy from the audience even as he’s screwing up his life, and the lives of everyone around him, in reverse chronological order.

But with the announcement of Radcliffe one has to assume they’ll be going for, if not a household name, someone else who’s a familiar face or has significant film or TV credits, lest there be an imbalance in the lead roles. I can think of half a dozen musical theater actors who are decent names, who’d be right for it, and who are roughly Radcliffe’s age (and only around half a dozen, mind you); but if any of them were to be cast opposite Harry Potter I’d think the delicate machinery of the show, tough to negotiate in any circumstances, would be even more likely to go askew, and aside from all the show’s other challenges, could well leave people wondering why the biggest star in the show has a secondary role whose biggest number and only solo is in the 1st half of Act 1.

(If on the other hand they find another star, then yes, I could easily foresee a surefire sellout turning into a true ticketbuying frenzy.)
