| I'm not calling you or anyone an idiot for liking it, especially if you experienced it live and that was your feeling on it. I said, and I stand by, that I don't get what people thought was so amazing about it. I wish I did, and I wish I agreed. (If anything I feel like because I'm squarely in the minority, *I* am the one thought of as an idiot for not liking this production -- thank goodness several trusted friends have expressed the same opinion of it). But the broadcasted film of her production was, for me, very badly directed... which translated into disappointing acting, bad sets and bad staging of musical numbers. I have no doubt the show was deeply felt live, despite that it may also have been poorly staged and designed. But the performances I'm sure were much better to experience live. I wish I had. I also just do not think this version of the show works, so it will always have an uphill battle for me. But I went into that cinema screening beaming, excited and so open to this production that was so praised I even took friends who aren't musical people per se, aren't Sondheim people per se, and had never seen or listened to it. I normally never do that with a tricky show I love. I don't know who disliked the production we saw screened more, me or my friends. I truly hope she finds a cast who do the show justice, and after all this time can find more effective ways to stage it and better designers. The show isn't going to change, but it can certainly be done as well as possible given its limitations... the cinema broadcast gave me no reason to hope that Friedman will be the director to do that, but since it's happening whether I like it or not, I will hope *sincerely* for the best and that this 2022 production by her, and live, will be a whole different experience. But that won't change my opinion of what I saw broadcast from London. |
