If I were an actor-singer of the right age and I had my choice of Franklin Shepard or Charley Kringas, I would take Charley, unless I wanted to test myself to see if I could make an almost thankless leading role work. Charley is the better role. It is one of those shows where you have to be careful with the curtain calls because the second leads — in this show, two — may well get more applause than the ostensible lead.

In this version of the show, Frank has only one solo, and it comes after Charley's show-stopping solo (except usually the transition music cuts short the applause). That is true in the original version, too, but Frank carries a lot more of ”Rich and Happy” than he does of ”That Frank.” Frank has no number comparable in impact to ”Franklin Shepard, Inc.” And Charley has always had a solo in Act Two: ”Good Thing Going.”

And in reply to one of portenopete’s posts: Jonathan Groff is four years older than Radcliffe. And then there Aaron Tveit, who is six years older, if he leaves Moulin Rouge in time. And there is Jay Armstrong Johnson (Tveit’s standby in Catch Me If You Can), two years older than Radcliffe and not as traditionally handsome as Groff or Tveit, but a brilliant actor who might bring an endearing quality to Frank that would be helpful.

Truly, however, I’m with Chazwaza in feeling like I never need to see the revised version of this show again, unless perhaps the cast really made me want to see it or if I heard from someone I trust that the director solved it in some way. I liked Friedman’s London production, as seen onscreen, more than I expected I might, but I also did not feel it came even close to making this version of the show work for me as the original did.

You know who would be a good Mary? Beanie Feldstein (a bit younger than Radcliffe). I would happily see a revival of the original version with Jay Armstrong Johnson, Radcliffe and Beanie Feldstein. :)
