I saw it live, from a seat quite near the stage, which was probably too close. Merrily is my favorite “failed” Sondheim musical, so when it was running during my last trip to London I had to see it. I found it to be very “brittle,” by which I mean that everyone in it seemed very much on edge and ready to explode. I thought that there were a few good individual scenes, but overall, I was quite disappointed.
Heading back to London this summer, where, so far, I haven’t identified THE show that I HAVE to see. That’s, perhaps, for the best.
