| I saw Diamond in concert at Madison Square Garden in the 90s; he put on a really good show. He had quite a few hits himself and wrote some famous songs for others. I remember reading that he had been announced to star around the early 1970s in the film version of "Promises, Promises", but of course, that was never made. Lots of planned musicals from that era, like "She Loves Me" starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke and another Julie Andrews vehicle, the Irving Berlin "Say It With Music", were cancelled because of some huge musical flops around that time. "Promises" did have a more pop music sensibility about it along with traditional kinds of numbers, but it still didn't get made. I guess the musical "Lost Horizon" put the nail in that and had Burt Bacharach running from movie musicals for good. |
