She's not singing to Bobby.
Sondheim and Furth have said that the show, for them, is really about Manhattan. So this is a commentary on a certain trapping of urban society. Another song that makes the NYC theme very clear is "Another Hundred People" which is also not sung to Bobby. I suppose you don't really care what Marta thinks either?
I dunno. Why, in the middle of a Faustian musical about baseball, do we get a song about the noises people make while they Mambo? For me, "The Ladies Who Lunch" makes infinitely more sense. |
