I think Joanne is looking around at some of these women, who may in fact, be married and spending time --- away from their husbands. Since marriage and relationships is a big theme of the show, she's making a point, that THIS is how they occupy their time? It was also a showcase created to give Stritch a big moment. Not for nothing did Oscar Hammerstein tell Sondheim to take the job as lyricist to "Gypsy" (after he was denied by Merman doing the music and lyrics) since it would be a great opportunity to learn how to write for a star. He had one talent-wise, if not box-office-wise in Stritch, so he wrote her a great number. (Sorry for all the "-wise" remarks, but I just re-watched some of "The Apartment" the other day, and that's the way things crumble. Cookie-wise).
