| There's a new video showing the cast in rehearsal, including interviews with some creative-staff members, and four lead performers. Beanie Feldstein has a teeny-tiny little-girlish speaking voice in real life. We don't know yet what dimension and expertise she would bring to the epic Styne-Merrill songs of FUNNY GIRL. I had to laugh at the bit in the video when the "tap choreographer" Ayodele Casel dismissed all other Broadway tap as "fuh-lap ball-change, fuh-lap ball-change," on her way to describing the supposedly electrifying, unprecedented syncopated rhythms in her FUNNY GIRL work. I got the impression she never saw or heard of Ron Field's tap work in ANYTHING GOES, Danny Daniels' work in THE TAP DANCE KID, Ernie Flatt and Ann Miller's choreography in SUGAR BABIES, or the world-class choreography of tap expert Henry LeTang in SOPHISTICATED LADIES and BLACK AND BLUE – to name just a few. And choreographer Ellenore Scott, extolling the superior Jared Grimes with her "Y'ALL ain't ready for 'Rat-A-Tat-Tat, Y'ALL ain't ready" is unaware that Jared already blazed a trail across the sky in AFTER MIDNIGHT. Note: The FUNNY GIRL revival went into rehearsal either a week and a half ago on Monday, February 28 or two and a half weeks ago on the Monday before that (can't remember.) |
