I saw the 1937 (non-musical) film version on a local, late Saturday night TV program called The Best of CBS some time in the late 50's. I found it to be haunting. It remains one of my favorites to this day, although for years only a shortened print was available. It was impeccably written, directed, and acted. The superb cast was headed by Ronald Colman. Dmitri Tiomkin's underscore is superb, and the complete original soundtrack is still available on CD. Some time in the mid-80's a much longer, restored print was presented on cable TV. That's the version currently shown today.

I saw the 1973 musical at a cinema in downtown Chicago. It was pretty bad with some horrible miscasting and some ludicrous performances. According to Wikipedia, 3-1/2 musical numbers were eventually cut, and that's the version that TCM shows occasionally. The shorter version remains a bad film.

Screen Archives sells a DVD that restores all the cut musical numbers. Most of the songs are just musically uninteresting with awful lyrics. Others work when performed outside of the film, but not in the movie itself.
