| I'm surprised and not surprised at all. Jared Grimes is not a bigger star than you're aware of. I'd say he's relatively unknown. And even his biggest thing - the TV series Manifest - did not stick around that long, and there are *nine* people on the poster for it and he's not one of them. But I do have to assume they've beefed the role up and/or just felt the need to make sure the world knows there is a black performer in a major role in this generally "very white" show. I'm not making any assessments of that being good or bad for them to do... but it is honestly bonkers for anyone to be above the title in this show except for Fanny and perhaps Nick (I know nick was above the title with Fanny in the original, but that was before the role of Fanny became the legend that it became after contracts were done for the original billing). To have it billed and marketed like an ensemble show is deeply misleading, not matter how much they may have revised -- it's like doing My Fair Lady and putting Eliza and Higgins and Pickering and Mrs. Higgins and Freddie and Mrs. Pierce above the title and marketing it as an ensemble show. In fact, from what I can see, the 2016 West End revival this production is sort-of "based" on either has *only* Fanny above the title or no one, and the entire 18 person cast listed alone the side of the image. Possibly Jane Lynch negotiated to be above the title, and because the role of Eddie is of similar size, or has been revised for Eddie or both roles to be bigger, they felt it wasn't fair if only Jared weren't above the title, of the 4 "main" roles? |
