| One very odd bit of trivia is that they cut half the racism section of "Simple": there's still the "you can't judge a book by its cover" element but gone was "the opposite of dark is bright..." Very odd--I understand the challenging nature of lyrics that say "anything that's dark is dumb" and referencing the NAACP--but how stupid do you have to expect the audience is that you don't think they would understand this was a commentary on racist thought, just as "the opposite of left is right" is a commentary on right-wingers in general and the "a woman's place is in the home" is a commentary on sexism? Just a thoughtless cut. Makes you wonder what they'd do to "Cabaret." Not having been there last night (regrettably), I can't really speak to the specifics, but it does seem to me that the Martin sequence could have been cut entirely if it felt that uncomfortable - did he still sing "cubber" the last time as written? Obviously all the "characters" in the Simple sequence are meant to satire mores of the time, from the "typical red blooded male" with his "golf on Saturday" to the (wonderfully confused) gender roles of June and John, etc - but if the black satire felt like it wasn't going to land anymore (and I get that) they should have just cut it all. OR - make the bold decision to present the score as is with no apologies. But for a one-time concert performance, I can see why they would want to make some revisions. Admittedly tricky. Otherwise, was the complete score featured this time, unlike in the Carnegie Hall concert? (Which also had its problems with too little rehearsal - for instance, Bernadette's odd phrasing/breathing in "Trumpets" - and, with history perhaps repeating itself, a rather disappointing vocal performance from Madeleine Kahn, much as I adore her.) |
