| I don't get it, really. And I know it's expensive and not lucrative, and it's hard to get the funding. But if *I* were Sondheim, with my many many millions of dollars, especially if I were in my 70s, 80s or 90s, and not able to live long enough to spend most of my money anyway (or hell, even if I were 40), I'd personally fund the filming of a standout productions of my shows, especially the ones that get it right with often misunderstood or poorly produced shows of mine. I know ALW has infinitely more money than Sondheim, probably, but as we learned when Sondheim passed away... he had MORE than enough to fund a few pro-shot videos of his shows and still have plenty left even if each one was a financial loss. If I were Sondheim I'd have had the entire Kennedy Center Sondheim Celebration filmed, or at the very least funded a feature length or mini-series documentary about the festival (ideally 1 episode for each of the 6 shows they produced). I'd have paid for a pro-shot of: -Assassins 2004 broadway revival (as perfect a production of Assassins as anyone will ever see - direction and performance wise) -Pacific Overtures in Japanese at Avery Fisher Hall -Anyone Can Whistle at Encores -Follies at Encores and/or Follies 2011 Broadway revival --- specifically in the LA run with Victoria Clark as Sally hell, i'd probably even have paid to film: -Sunday in the Park with Jake and Annaleigh (not because it was better than the original, but to bring it to a newer audience with a huge movie star giving a great performance) -the Donmar production of Merrily (he wouldn't have wanted that one but I do) -Forum, Nathan Lane revival -Saturday Night at Second Stage -Road Show at the Public -Sweeney Todd john doyle revival (Sweeney has been filmed A LOT with the Lansbury/Hearn original, the successful movie, and 2 "staged concerts", but still) Sadly there's been no major production of A Little Night Music that's been good enough that I'd want it to represent the show for all time on video... except maybe the NYCO revival that was filmed for Live at Lincoln Center, so at least there's that. |
