The Rose nomination and win was an egregious example of manipulating categories for the wrong reasons. Pickering has maybe 4 scenes in a 3-hour plus show. He's the lead singer with an ensemble in 2 great musical numbers, but has no solo, and his character should not have one. The show is not about him. It's about Henry and Eliza. The role is certainly not a lead.

Rose definitely earned the right to be above the title. In addition, he gave one of the great interpretations of the role, but he should not have been nominated, let alone win the Tony for Best Musical Lead.

Along with the William Daniels decision for 1776, it's one of the most shameful episodes in Tony history, one that really gave the institution a black eye. I really had a hard time even taking the awards seriously after that incident.
