I didn't object to the sentiment, I objected to the turn of phrase. Since you have those connections to the Black community, I'm sure you can see that you could perhaps be a bit more sensitive when using phrases like "back of the bus" or dropping jokes about the Lenape "selling" Manhattan. They carry a certain sting, especially when coming from White folks. I used to be a bit more flippant and provocative with my humor, but I take very seriously what my friends of color say to me as well.
