| Okay, you're going a bit far. They would not be "leaving the black guy out in the cold" ... the "black guy" is playing a role that is NEVER in any major production of the show (including the movie), a shimmering jewel of what the show has to offer, or anything they use for marketing the show. And Jared is not at all famous, nor is his character a lead, so it's more notable to include him above the title than to leave him out... except, as you say, because of his race. Is that where we are now? It's also possible that his billing could be white-liberal-performance of diversity... aka making sure they put their black performer out there anytime possible and hoping that giving him the same level of credit as the "very white" leads will make the producers and show look like it's presenting the kind of theater that won't get criticized for its whiteness (i mean the show is about white people, real people who were white... so this shouldn't be seen as a thing to criticize necessarily, but here we are). Also, honestly, Ramin Karimloo... do I even have to tell you he is not only not "very white", but **not even white**? Not to generalize but his name might have been a clue for you. Ramin is Iranian (he was even born in Iran). He may be fairly light-skinned but you don't get to decide he is "very white", let alone equating his whiteness to the whiteness of Jane Lynch, who is actually very white on all levels. And I'm also very tired of people just equating all Jews with the kind of "white bread" whiteness you're referring to when you say "very white". Beanie Feldstein has an extremely Jewish name, and looks identifiably Jewish. Jewish people are not the same kind of white, and are not treated automatically the way "white" people are... it's actually like a big issue throughout history, and in this country... and not all that long ago, including today. Anti-semitism is very real, and it's not based on regular white christians thinking that Jewish people are the same as them. The fact that a show that is LITERALLY ABOUT ACTUAL REAL JEWISH AND WHITE PEOPLE has a Jewish lead playing the Jewish lead, an Iranian playing her love interest lead, a black guy playing the next biggest supporting male role, and a white female tv star playing the other biggest female role (a jewish woman but not played by one)... "sure looks bad" to you is really saying more about you than about the production. Not only are half of the actors billed above the title clearly not white, but the show is about a real Jewish person who was very famous as a Jewish performer. Are we at a place where you, as a wealthy middle-aged moderate white guy, have decided that every show with actors above the title needs to have at least 1/3-1/2 of them be not only POC but with skin dark enough that you recognize them as not "very white", otherwise it looks bad and is problematic? |
