The black people that I engage with every day know me very well and appreciate my honesty. I joined ATC back in '97 because some of my black friends told me about it. Today they all want nothing to do with posting on ATC (although they read it occasionally). Whenever I post something that they find offensive, they tell me about it and I always post an apology on the board.

Their biggest complaint is that a lot white people on this board take it upon themselves to speak for black people. They really hate that.

When I was in college on the weight lifting team at the U. of I, I was friends with 2 guys who were native American. Unfortunately I have lost contact with them. Today some of my partner's family are actually mixed race: part black, part native American, and part white. According to Wikipedia, Peter Minuit did purchase Manhattan from the Lenape in 1626. I agree my joke wasn't very funny, but it was accurate.

Obviously there are certain phrases and words that a white person should not say in general conversation. I've never been made aware by any of my black acquaintances that "back of the bus" was a phrase that white folks should not use.

On this board, even calling the behavior of a disgusting person like Linda Tripp "slovenly" offends some people. Nevertheless, great writers like Dickens, O'Neill, Inge, and others used that word in the same context that I did here. It's really hard today to be honest and not offend some people.

I find a lot of things posted on this board very distasteful, but I usually just ignore them.
